RV Vacation: Best Fishing Spots in the Midwest

Travel

There’s nothing that’s more relaxing than fishing. With nothing around you other than nature and friends, fishing is a great way to reconnect with the world around you, unwind, have fun and get together with your friends and family.

It’s kind of an art—fishing is a skill that needs to be learned, and you can teach your kids to fish in the same way that your parents taught you.

The best way to learn—and teach—fishing is to try your hand at the most fertile waters in the Midwest. You have to check out these spots, and they’re all within a short drive of Iowa.

LAKE MINNETONKA, MINNESOTA

Located just an hour or so west of Minneapolis, Lake Minnetonka offers some of the most pristine and varied fishing in the Midwest. As a revered bass fishing destination for generations, this lake is the perfect place to rent a boat and catch the big one. Or, you can stick to the shore and land a smaller fish with your kids.

Either way, it’s a great place to explore nature and learn about fishing. And there’s plenty of pristine camping nearby.

Where to Stay: Town and Country Campground

With more than 80 campsites and plenty of scenic beauty, nearby Town and Country campground offers a heated pool, a hot tub, fun for the kids and plenty of full hookups.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER, NORTHERN IOWA

The eastern border of Iowa is made of the Mississippi River, the backbone of the Midwest. With its start in Minnesota and end in Louisiana, it stretches throughout the country and offers some of the most fun, exciting fishing in the world.

And for Iowa residents, it’s right in our own backyard!

For those looking to get the hang of fly fishing, there are plenty of shallows, sunken trees and other challenges. Expect to get some huge bass and bluegill in these parts.

Where to stay: Miners Creek Hideaway

With 46 RV campsites with full utility hookups, Miners Creek Hideaway in Guttenberg, Iowa is the perfect place to set up camp on your fishing adventure. Bring your clubs: there’s also a nine-hole golf course  teeming with wildlife and breathtaking views.
