Morwood Campground & Resort: Campground Review
This was our first visit to Morwood Campground, and it is so nice we have already made plans to return! Morwood Campground is a privately owned campground near Hazelton, IA. It is located just off of Highway 150 approximately 7 miles north of Independence, and 6 miles south of Oelwein. Morwood is open April 1 through October 15, weather permitting.
Campground
The campground’s owners Ray & Denese Lundry and Angela & LP Polpelka do an amazing job keeping this campground beautiful. It has large, pull through 70 x 40 sites that are generally level. 24 are full hook-up sites, and 24 are water & electric. There are also 2 group sites for 4-6 campers to park facing each other. Morwood also has 6 cabins and 5 tent sites. Rates for 2018 are $35 for full hook-up sites on weekends and holidays, $31 for weekdays. For water and electric sites, $31 for weekends and holidays, $27 for weekdays. Cabins are $62 for weekends and holidays, $57 for weekdays, and includes air conditioning, a microwave, and 2 bunk beds. Tent sites are $22 (and tents put on a camper site) are $22 every day. There is no extra charge for making reservations, and especially for weekends reservations are highly recommended.
Amenities
Morwood has many amenities including a convenience store, laundry facilities, basketball court, sand volleyball court, playground area, horseshoe pits, miniature golf and a heated swimming pool. Firewood is available for $10 a wheelbarrow. If you do not have a full hook-up site, there are 2 dump stations. 2 shower houses are available, and they are immaculate! The campground has themed weekend activities for the kids including Halloween, Christmas, Hawaiian, and several cook-offs. This year, the Hawaiian weekend also includes a fundraiser for Kidsake. There is something for everyone in the family to do and they usually have events scheduled all the way from April to September.
Pool
The campground is right in the middle of Amish country. A map of shopping, bakeries and other points of interest in the Amish community can be found at the campground office. In Independence and Oelwien there is also plenty of shopping and places to eat. Independence also has the county fairgrounds with the Independence Motor Speedway. Races are on Saturday night. In Oelwein you can visit the Oelwein Railroad and Historical Museum. Not far from the campground is Fontana Park which offers canoeing, fishing, a wildlife display, nature center, hiking and other activities. 3 public golf courses are within a short drive. If you need something for your RV, Jasper’s RV is about 2 miles north on Highway 150.
